Bae Yong Joon to open Café in Hawaii!

26 Jan

Wow I am so excited for this! It’s set to open this year in April and will be called “Gorilla in the Café Hawaii. He has a restaurant in Korea located in Gangnam called, “Gorilla in the Kitchen“.

I’m not a big fan of Bae Yong Joon but I think it’s awesome that he decided to open up a cafe in Hawaii!

“Gorilla in the Café Hawaii will be located at 2155 Kalakaua Ave. and is tentatively set to open in April. Bae is expected to attend the grand opening.”

For more information check out the article about it at Honolulu Pulse.

BYJ owns 2 cafe’s in Japan: Gosireh and Cafe-B.

Get your Rice on this weekend!

7 Sep

In the words of my lyrical friend Toby Tamaye:

“Rice Rice Baby. Vanilla Rice Rice Baby.
All right stop, collaborate & listen.
Rice is back with a brand new invention.
Something grabs a hold of me tightly, flow like a musubi, daily & nightly.
Will it ever stop? Yo, I don’t know.
Head to Magic Island and you’ll know.
To the extreme I eat the rice like a vandal
Head to the Rice Fest and eat as much rice as you can handle.”

There are two huge rice events going on this weekend!

Sake barrel opening ceremony at last year's Joy of Sake

This Friday September 9, 2011 is the Joy of Sake. It’s a celebration where you can eat delicious food from 15 restaurants and drink over 300 kinds of sake! Check out the restaurant and food details here: http://www.joyofsake.com/restaurants/restaurantsHON.htm

Rows and rows of sake

I am especially excited to try the Sauteed Escargot with Prawns in chili ginger sauce from Chai’s and the Char-Broiled Sake Kasu Marinated Black Cod on red bean rice cake and grilled green onion from Hoku’s. I’m drooling just thinking about them.
I’m glad they moved it indoors this year to the Sheraton and not the Academy of Arts again. Even though it’s beautiful at the Academy of Arts, it was way too hot and humid. Now at the Sheraton it will be nice and cool in the air conditioning!

This is one of my favorite events to attend and will be my 3rd time going, so I will share some tips and advice:

  • Make sure to eat all the food first (food runs out much faster than the sake)!
  • Or you can have a friend watch your table while you grab all the food and bring it back to enjoy with some sake.
  • Stick to the sake with the gold stars and the ones that you can only get in Japan! The gold stars are awarded to sake with the top scores annually by 10 judges from Japan and the U.S ( I want to know how I can get a job as a judge).

There’s no way to get through all 300 sake. Trust me, I’ve tried. Last year I got through about 55 of them and then it was all a blur.

When: Friday, September 9, 2011

Where: Sheraton Waikiki Hotel

2255 Kalakaua Avenue

Time: 7:00–9:30 p.m.

Cost: $80 per person

Buy Tickets Online or in person at The Sake Shop

Then Saturday September 11, 2011 is the 2nd annual Rice Festival at Magic Island!

There will be lots of rice dishes to eat, a spam musubi eating contest, “Rice-ipe” contest, celebrity cooking demonstrations, scavenger hunt and more! See event schedule here.

Meals On Wheels Adventure!!

7 Feb

Today I joined Rick Nakama and Mark Tam in delivering food to senior citizens through Lanakila Pacific’s Meals On Wheels program. Rick and Mark usually go every Monday to deliver food on their usual route through downtown and Liliha area. There are 99 routes throughout Oahu that services senior citizens that have the greatest need in low income and rural areas. They are always in need of volunteers! So if you have some free time and want to help a great cause sign up! They have some saturday routes open right now!
We arrived at Lanakila Pacific around 9:30 am!
Here is the entrance to where you pick up the food to deliver..

All the orange bags that the volunteers pack the food in! This guy really wanted to be in all my pictures.  Haha! But sadly it came out blurry..

Make sure to count all the food before you leave so you don’t have to come back if you are short a meal..!

Here are Rick and Mark putting all the food into the car.. they look so happy!

Great team work!

Here’s me consulting the route directions and all the addresses to the places we are delivering to.

Here’s our driver! But I have no idea what he’s doing in this picture..

*Okay I found out what he’s doing.. He left a comment on explaining. http://lalalinzy.com/events/meals-on-wheels-adventure/#comments

I was the navigator! Made sure we delivered to all the right places.. and the right amount of food. It’s an important job.

Mark was our food protector/runner! But I have no picture of him since he was being camera shy.

So Mark and Rick told me that it usually takes them only 1 hour to complete the route. However, today we ran into some interesting situations…

First off.. there were road closures everywhere!! So we had to make a couple of detours. We were stuck in this traffic for awhile.  Ahh!! We even considered having Mark run out of the car and down the street to deliver the food so we wouldn’t have to wait anymore. Haha.

Then we ran into Ricky Li waiting at the bus stop!! Haha like his pose…

He took a cool picture of us waving at him… =) (credit pic: Ricky Li)

Delivering  food! The people were really nice..

This man was so cute… He was waving to the camera.

This is what Rick does when Mark and I deliver the food. He watches the car and tweets!

Then we ran into more road blocks!! Ahhh!! Mini transformers coming to attack us! (That’s what Rick called them)

And then came the rain!! haha!!

But despite all the delays and roadblocks we made it back to return the bags!

Tried to take a group picture in front of the sign but my head blocked part of it… whoops.

I had a lot of fun today delivering food. I think what makes it so great is that not only are you doing something good but you’re having fun driving around with your friends as well.

Check out Lanakila Pacific’s Website for more info and follow them on twitter!

Here’s a video of another incident that happened during the delivering. One of the elevators in a building was broken so we walked up 19 flights of stairs. There was a lady that was waiting in the lobby for 20 minutes for the elevator so that’s why we decided to take the stairs.

I didn’t edit it so watch it if you’re really curious and want to hear us talking trash about Rick for a good 5 minutes while climbing up all the stairs. haha. Also lots of blair witch action going on to make it more “real”. =P

It was a fun adventure! Hope more people get the chance to do this.. =)

Also stay tuned for part 2 of our day… lunch at a new restaurant called Jin Din Rou!

Sake Shop Farewell Avy Party

22 Jan

Last week Sunday my friends and I had a farewell party for Avy who moved to Japan this week.

We decided to have a small party at The Sake shop. The owners of The Sake Shop, Malcom and Nadine are so awesome and let us use the store after it was closed.

Thanks to Colin we had a lot of delicious food such as sushi, shrimp tempura, noodles, and chicken yakitori (chicken skewers)!

Of course, we had lots of Sake to drink!

My favorites of the night were the Sparkling Sake (Harushika Tokimeki) and the Sake in the cool looking can (Narutotai Ginjo Namagenshu) I love namagenshu because they usually have a nice clear, fresh, and crisp taste.

The highlight of the night though was when Malcom brought out this Sake with snakes it them!! Called Habushu is Japanese. We all had a shot and it was quite strong and pungent to put it in a nice way. Actually it was pretty disgusting. I felt like I could taste the snakes!! I did not finish it.

Instead we decided to pour a huge shot for our friend Gerald who was the last to get the party. I wish we took a video of his reaction when he drank the whole shot. We didn’t tell him what it was until after he drank it. Haha it was so great.

It was a very fun night and I hope we can have future parties there!

Also to my friend and twin sister Avy: I will miss you a lot but I have so excited for you and your new life in Japan. I can’t wait to visit you!! =)
